Who actually decides who belongs? Being at home, being part of a society and „belonging“ is an active everyday action. We belong because we locate ourselves and are part of this society, as people in all our diversity, with all our stories of origin, special talents and individual forms of coexistence and closeness. But what does this mean in times when solidarity, humanity and self-determination over one’s own body and life plans are being called into question by parts of society?
DAZUGEHÖREN! BELONGING! is the Kunsthaus’s first exhibition following the Dresden City Council’s decision in favor of the robotron canteen – as the new home of the Kunsthaus and as a new venue for a variety of partnerships in art and culture – and is dedicated to the question of what holds us together, what constitutes solidarity, love and also the responsibility we bear in culture for a diverse and just coexistence. The exhibition DAZUGEHÖREN! BELONGING! accompanies the project „OFFENER PROZESS“, which has been traveled since 2022 to various locations in Saxony and beyond. It uses contemporary art, performances and concerts to relate diverse questions about a living society based on solidarity in relation to the long road to recognition of a post-migrant society.
DAZUGEHÖREN! BELONGING! is also a tribute to the inspiring thinker, African-American activist and literary scholar bell hooks, who opened up a new space for thought and action under the title Belonging. A Culture of Place opened up a new space for thought and action. „Belonging“ describes our unique ability to enter into relationships, the active interaction of people in our everyday lives, the passing on of knowledge and the creation and establishment of circles of friends and families, as well as the localization and love of the natural environment and the critical reappraisal of histories of violence.
