The exhibition 1000° addresses current questions posed to ceramics in contemporary art and explores the meanings and messages of this material, its processing and cultural significance for our times. Today, more than ever, artists again appreciate the wide range of possible applications of this sustainable material.
Local knowledge and global relations converge, be it in regard to the creation of forms and glazes or the cultural meanings that are adopted. The selected works document subjective and aesthetic decisions, while at the same time conveying the social, political or spiritual meanings, the histories and the usages associated with a material.
1000° presents selected contemporary and contemporary-historical approaches in dealing with an old material. To do justice to the diversity of perspectives on the medium, the exhibition is enriched by platforms on which artistic exhibits alternate and are supplemented by others during the course of the show.
