Wie materialisiert sich eine Idee? Welche Kraft bergen Proposal und Handlungsanweisung als eigenständige künstlerische Formen? How to Make – Ideen, Notationen, Materialisierungen thematisiert die verschiedenen Momente künstlerischer Produktion. Die Ausstellung setzt der statischen Werkpräsentation ein breites Spektrum von Konzepten und Formen sowie von Beteiligungen und Prozessen entgegen. Mit der Formulierung einer künstlerischen Idee wird oftmals schon das Kunstwerk selbst geschaffen. Mit der Materialisierung der Idee hingegen setzt ein Prozess ein, der sowohl hinsichtlich des physischen Produkts als auch in Bezug auf die verschiedenen Stadien, die eine solche Materialisierung durchläuft, eine transformative Kraft freisetzt.
Ausgehend von einigen historischen Positionen der Konzeptkunst schlägt die Ausstellung eine Brücke zu gegenwärtigen Formen des künstlerischen Schaffensprozesses von der Idee zu ihrer Materialisierung. Wann ein Kunstwerk eigentlich fertig ist spielt dabei ebenso eine Rolle wie die Veränderlichkeit des Materials selbst. So stellt sich letztlich auch immer die Frage, wie künstlerische Prozesse in Gang gesetzt werden, was künstlerische Produktion bedeuten kann und was sie am Laufen hält.
