Mario Pfeifer: Zelle 5

– eine Rekonstruktion des Falls Oury Jalloh

In the expansive film installation “Cell 5”, which is currently on display at the Dresden City Museum as part of the exhibition “Grid of Violence – from Glances to Deeds”, Mario Pfeifer reconstructs the death of Oury Jalloh, who died on January 7, 2005, bound hand and foot in a fire in cell number 5 of the Dessau-Roßlau police station.

To date, the case has gone through all legal instances in Germany and yet has not been legally resolved. There are many indications of outside influence. Using court documents, witness statements and audiovisual archives, and together with forensic scientist Iain Peck and the Initiative zum Gedenken an Oury Jalloh e.V., Mario Pfeifer attempts to find an answer to the question of how Oury Jalloh was able to burn to death in police custody in Dessau.

The film screening and subsequent joint discussion with the artist Mario Pfeifer is dedicated to this shocking case – it deals with the media-artistic strategies in dealing with court documents and forensic investigations as well as the question of what role art plays in dealing with truth-finding and public perception.

“Cell 5 – A Reconstruction” won the Hessian Film and Cinema Award in the “Best Short Film” category in 2023.

Mario Pfeifer will be present. Welcome and moderation: Christiane Mennicke-Schwarz and Su-Ran Sichling (curators of “Raster der Gewalt – Von Blicken zu Taten”).
