Christa Jeitner
The textile works by Christa Jeitner (born in Blumberg in 1935) are testimonies of a generation of artists whose work evolved with the strong desire for freedom of expression and new artistic forms under the difficult conditions of the GDR from the 1960s to 1980s – years in which art was also constantly monitored. At the fore are works that the artist created before 1989 and were influenced by the political conditions at the time, also beyond Germany and Poland. They include the Auschwitz cycle which she began with in 1964, but also works from the 1980s like the Poland commemoration cloths or “Ermutigung” made with reference to a seminal poem by Wolf Biermann.
