Together, we cordially invite you to 22 sound walks starting at the Kulturpalast, as well as talks and performances at Galerie Ursula Walter!

The Electrical Walks by sound artist Christina Kubisch, which have already been presented in more than 75 cities worldwide, are an invitation to a special kind of exploration of space and sound: Visitors are invited to take part in a public tour, with sound transmitted via coils built into headphones that react to the electromagnetic waves in our environment: Lighting systems, wireless communication systems, radar systems, anti-theft devices, surveillance cameras, cell phones, computers, tram cables, antennas, navigation systems, ATMs, wireless Internet, neon signs, public transportation networks, etc. generate electric fields that are hidden as if under a cloak of invisibility, but have a strong presence.

The invisible electromagnetic fields that are made audible in this way are unexpectedly musical: there are complex layers of high and low frequencies, rhythmic sequence loops, groups of tiny signals, long droning noises, and many things that are constantly changing and difficult to describe.

Some sounds are very similar all over the world, while others are specific to a particular city or country. The Electrical Walks performance from October 24 to 30 is taking place at the invitation and on the initiative of dasKONZERTs and as the 11th edition of dasKONZERTs in collaboration with the Kunsthaus Dresden and Galerie Ursula Walter.

Performance Charline Gdalia “The BIG FOLEY” at Galerie Ursula Walter 7:30 p.m.

Background: Since the late 1970s, Christina Kubisch has been working with the system of electromagnetic induction, which she has developed from a basic technique into an individual artistic tool. In 2003, she began a new series of works in public space that trace the electromagnetic fields of urban environments in the form of city walks. The performance of Christina Kubisch's Electrical Walks in Dresden is taking place at the initiative of and in collaboration with dasKONZERTs and Galerie Ursula Walter.

The BIG FOLEY

“The BIG FOLEY” is a performance by Charline Gdalia, created as part of the filming of her movie project “A Song for the Smells You Shan’t Forget.”

The script for the performance called for four actors to play live the sounds of the film scenes projected behind them. Unlike in classic film production, where the work of Foley artists, or “sound effects artists,” remains invisible, this special part of film production was not only recorded as part of the documentary film project, but also filmed and edited.

The silent film scenes shown as part of the performance exclusively depict people eating or cooking. The Foley set is a table covered with all kinds of objects that can make noise, a few small instruments and cutlery—in short, a table that challenges and perhaps even sabotages the Western European notion of politeness, which dictates that one should not make noise while eating.

The installation is activated by performers at announced performance times, each time by different performers, but with the same images, with the idea of rehearsing the same movements and sounds over and over again, knowing well that it will never be the same.

Background: Charline Gdalia is an artist and curator who lives in Dresden and Paris. Her research is based on learning practices. On the one hand, it concerns the continuous learning we need to keep pace with technical and technological innovations; on the other hand, it concerns language learning, in particular the teaching of reading and thus (non-)transmission. Lately, she has been focusing on familiar, repetitive gestures that are passed on through generations, especially in the kitchen.

She is currently part of the alternative education program at the Rupert Residency (Vilnius), where she is exploring practices of food exchange and recipe collection. She has recently had exhibitions at Uniwerk Pirna, Tapetenwerk Leipzig, CAC Chanot Clamart, Käferklause Dresden, Château de Vincennes and at the School of Visual Arts‘ Oktogon Dresden.
