During the 1990s, Dresden became a celebrated centre of technoculture alongside Berlin and was regarded as the „little „kleine Detroit of the East“. The city was full of semi-legal underground venues that increasingly booked internationally renowned DJs besides the local ones. The cabinet exhibition developed with Klubnetz Dresden tells of places that have disappeared as well as those whistill exist today, of improvisation and displacement, and of the rise of Strasse E in the former industrial area of Dresden’s north to become the epicentre of Dresden’s club culture. There is also a selection of the changing flyer culture and today’s almost exclusively digital media, which from the 1990s to the present day communicate and disseminate information about events in the region – between Leipzig, Freiberg, Chemnitz, Dresden and Löbau.

 

Networking, solidarity and collective working methods, the search for free spaces and political resistance to right-wing extremist movements also play a role in the exhibition. It places particular emphasis on non-commercial objectives and formats – from raves to FreeTek events and collectively organized clubs.

 

The different sides of a very lively scene, which plays a decisive role to whether people feel at home in a city or not, become more visible and palpable in this project. The exhibition was created as a contribution to the German premiere of Techno Worlds in the robotron-Kantine, a collaboration with the Goethe Institute to which the Kunsthaus Dresden also invited the Klubnetz – it will be extended on the occasion of the exhibition “DAZUGEHÖREN! BELONGING!” and will be shown in the robotron-Kantine until November 3.
