MOBILES LANDSCHAFTSATELIER

Vot ken you mach mobil
Vot ken you mach mobil is a project dedicated to the diversity of cultural identities for junior high schools in rural regions of Saxony and in Dresden. The mobile exhibition displays works by Amit Epstein, Shira Wachsmann and Claire Waffel in a container at the schools and offers pupils an exhibition visit followed by joint artistic work on the theme of identity in the frame of projects days. They are accompanied by different mentors, in Bautzen and Radibor by the artist Anna Schapiro, the dancer and choreographer Liron Dinovitz, the set designer Martina Lebert, and the communications research specialist and musician Lars Hiller.
Vot ken you mach mobil was developed in the frame of the show Vot ken you mach? On Jewish Identities in Europe Today at Kunsthaus Dresden in cooperation with the Jewish Community Dresden, Hatikva e. V., and the junior professorship for art and art education of the TU Dresden for junior high schools and high schools in Saxony.
The central concern is to convey to pupils positive approaches to the diversity of cultural identities in our society. Based on the example of Jewish identity and works by young Jewish artists, it is shown how identity changes in a modern society, how many different influences have an impact on our cultural self-understanding, and what role history, remembrance, the context in which one grows up, religion, the affiliation to a language area, and also current influences from the media and pop culture play in this regard.
The project day consists in viewing the mobile exhibition, the joint evaluation of what has been seen during the first half of the school day, and joint practice-oriented artistic work during the second half. Based on examples in the exhibition, own approaches to the theme of identity, of who I am and who I would like to be, are developed and tested in a playful way. Various contemporary means of expression and documentation (photo, film, video, and sound recording) are used under guidance.
The results of the pupils will be exhibited in spring of 2014 after the project work at school and also in the frame of the project at Kunsthaus Dresden.
Vot ken you mach mobil is a project dedicated to cultural education initiated by Kunsthaus Dresden – Municipal Gallery for Contemporary Art in cooperation with the Jewish Community Dresden, the Hatikva e. V., and the junior professorship of art and art education with a main focus on new media at the Institute of Art and Music Studies of the TU Dresden for junior high schools and high schools in Saxony. It is supported in the frame of the state program Weltoffenes Sachsen für Demokratie und Toleranz (Cosmopolitan Saxony for Democracy and Tolerance).
WHITE CUBE /BLACK BOX
About four years ago, we began the project White Cube/Black Box for all types of schools in Dresden. This was a challenge as it demanded that we not only present but also produce contemporary art on a high level in schools — in intensive cooperation with the youths themselves, at that. Since then, the project has taken us on a mutual journey with the large group of motivated, open-minded and adventurous youths from schools all over Dresden who have since joined the project. Together with the architects, artists and designers we invited to act as mentors, the participating youths develop — in their stretch of the program and in their own space — something that means a great deal to us: Their own art on a high level.
White Cube / Black Box is a project by school students since 2009, initiated by the Kunsthaus Dresden. The project’s main objective is to bring architecture, design and contemporary art in a holistic process to schools: A temporary art space is created; using containers, the youths themselves design the exhibition space which then wanders from school to school. In the spring of 2010, the first mutual exhibition on the topic „Luxury“ was successfully presented on the grounds of the Marie-Curie-Gymnasium. Among other things, the exhibition explored the question of what we understand by luxury and what type of luxury is still modern today.
In November/December 2010, White Cube / Black Box had its second exhibition: The chosen theme being the future, the exhibition titled ZUKUNFT 2050 (FUTURE 2050) looked forward experimentally to the year 2050. By the summer of 2013, seven exhibitions were developed in the context of the project that explore topics from the everyday lives of both youths and adults in a myriad of ways by means of contemporary art.
In the summer of 2014, a great retrospective of all artworks originating from the project together with new projects on the topic „Display“ will be shown at the Kunsthaus Dresden.
The project reflects in an exemplary manner all the functions of an establishment of contemporary art — only then to fill it with original forms and contents. The participants are school students grades 7 – 12 from secondary schools including Gymnasium who work together in freely chosen groups for a period of 4 months each with one or two mentors from the field of art, design or architecture.
For more information on White Cube / Black Box, the latest news, topics, project participants, mentors and the exhibitions since 2010 as well as information on participation and signing up, please click here.
The project is an initiative of the Kunsthaus Dresden and is funded by the Saxon State Ministry of Education and Sports and the European Social Fund. An application has been made to extend the project, which receives funding from the Saxon State Ministry for Education and the European Social Fund in the context of the ideas competition „Heraus-Forderung! Ganzheitliches Lernen im Projekt!“. We intend to continue the project until the end of the eligibility period 2015.
Strategies of Non-Knowledge / BUKO12 (German Federal Congress of Art Education)
In collaboration with the renowned Siemens Foundation, an exhibition on contemporary art and its educational potential in schools took place at the Kunsthaus Dresden in the summer of 2011. The collaboration was embedded in the broad discourse leading up to the German Federal Congress of Art Education which culminated in a conference interlinking all projects held at the Hygienemuseum in Dresden (www.buko12.de).
Strategies of Non-Knowlegde / BUKO12 (Bundeskongresses der Kunstpädagogik)
With the project „Walden #3 oder Das Kind als Medium — Exhibition and Conferences on the Past and Present of Aesthetic Education and Reform“ in 2007, the Kunsthaus Dresden initiated a pilot project that went beyond the earlier project work with youths, a project that intended to reveal the potential of a collaboration between youths and contemporary visual artists. School students and art educators from eight Dresden schools and day care facilities participated in the successful presentation, which was preceded by a yearlong project preparation phase which took place in and outside the classroom. As part of the project, a special exhibition looked back on one hundred years of art education and progressive education in the GDR and FRG. Three conferences, which focused on an interdisciplinary interchange on the past and present of art education and sought to inspire mutual inspiration, drew not only educators and artists but also families and an interested public. The project was well received by school students and teaching staff as well as school administration; the city of Munich, with support from the PwC Foundation, subsequently requested the project as a special reference project for the Rathausgalerie München. The second large exhibition of the Walden project series, titled „Walden #3 oder Die Schule des Lebens“, was presented with great success in May 2009. Five regional schools participated in this project as well as the Munich Department of Arts and Culture, and several projects and associations including the Kultur- und Schulservice München / SPIELkultur e.V., the Kultur- und Spielraum München e.V. — the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich and art educators from Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich were involved in two conferences which took place in Munich itself.
The development and the first part of the project in Dresden in 2007, titled „Walden #3 oder Das Kind als Medium“, was funded by the German Federal Cultural Foundation, the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony and the Robert Bosch Foundation; the second part was funded by the city of Munich and the PwC Foundation. A book on Walden #3 is slated for publication by publishing house Spector (Leipzig).
